I personally will choose a heavier gauge to wear for a week or two, whether it be a spiral taper, glass gauge or stone gauge. I have found that they slowly will stretch your ears and become too loose. At that point put on some jajoba oil and slide the next size in.
I use spiral tapers and tattoo goo antibiotic lotion for mine. 1mm at a time!! I leave mine in for 4-6 weeks before going up a size. I’ve had minimal pain and optimal results. Everything takes time. If it’s too painful to stretch to your next size, then leave your current size in for a while longer. I play with mine quite often, with clean hands, by rotating or pushing my taper back and forth. It’s actually become somewhat of a bad habit now. lol
I wash them often and clean my jewelry every day, too. I’m currently a 2g (6mm).
I’m probably going to get so much shit for this lmao but once I got to 3/4, I started using silicone. I would soak them in a really hot shower and massage them and then massage them with jojoba oil for a while then pop in the silicone tunnel! I’ve never once had an issue. It’s not recommended whatsoever but it’s what i have done. The trick i used was to go 1 millimeter at a time.
Now I am at 1 1/4" :)

I used straight tapers at first and had issues with it causing pain. I switched to using spiral tapers so I could go slower and work up to it. Using those I stretched to a 2 with no problems and also got some cool jewelry to wear in the process.
Slowly! Good things come with time. I bought tapers and I’d always stretch them after a long shower and I’d apply A&D ointment to help guide the taper through and stretch the hole. I’d wait a month before going up a size. It took time but I didn’t have any problems.
