Why Can't I Insert My Double Flare Plugs?
May 13, 2022 / by Alex Peace
One of the most common questions we get here at Two Feather Plugs is "Why can't I insert my double flare plugs?"
A lot of our customers order double flare plugs for the first time and cannot seem to get them in their ears. We see this a lot with the smaller sizes at 6mm (2 gauge) and 8mm (0 gauge). You try and you try and you just can't seem to get the double flare plug into your ears. We understand, we have all been there. No, you do not have the wrong size. Chances are that your stretched ears just are not ready.
Let's dive into some of the reasons why you cannot insert your double flare plugs.
Is this the first time using a double flare plug?
Chances are this is the first time you are using a double flare plug. If this is the case your ears are probably used to stretching with a single flare plug. A single flare plug will have the same gauge from the front of the plug to the back of the plug. So if you are wearing a 2 gauge plug the entire wearable surface will be 2 gauge.
With a double flare plug, you will have a flare that is typically 1-2mm more than the actual gauge size of your ears. So if you purchased a 2 gauge double flare plug it will have a 2 gauge inner surface with a 0 gauge outer flare. This flare is used to help keep your plug in your ears. If you recently stretched your ears to a 2 gauge chances are your ears are not ready for the double flare plugs and you will have to wait until your freshly stretched ear has a little more elasticity or room inside the stretched ear.
Your ears are not ready for a double flare plug
If you have just stretched to a gauge size (let's continue to use 2 gauge) then your ears will not be ready for the double flare plugs. Maybe you used a taper and just stretched your ears to a 2 gauge. If you try to get a 2 gauge double flare plug in your ears, they will not like you. Chances are you will injure your ears.
If you are freshly stretched give yourself some time before trying to insert a double flare plug. Everyone's ears are different and there is no reason to rush, but an average time to put in double flare plugs is around 3-4 weeks after your initial stretch. If you try and they are still giving you trouble wait a little longer.
How do you get Double Flare plugs in your stretched ears?
Now that you have waited for your stretched ears to heal a bit and allowed a little more elasticity in your ears you are ready to try to put your double flare plugs in for the first time. We recommend doing this task right after you take a hot shower. This will allow your stretched ears to have even more elasticity, and it will be easier to get the double flare into your ears. Add some natural oil into either your stretched ears or your double flare plugs to make getting them in even simpler.
There are a few different methods to get double flare plugs into your ears. The method Two Feather prefers is known as the button method. It's a simple technique. Start out by putting the bottom of the plug inside your ear. The ear should be on the inside of the plug (the inner saddle). Next, pull down so there is a little room on the top of your ear and pop the top of the plug into your ear just like a button.
When you put in your double flare plugs there should be little to no pain associated with it. If you experience intense pain or bleeding stop. It just means you are moving too quickly and your ears are still not ready for this size double flare plug. Let your ears heal and stretch more and be patient.
What are our customers saying when asked
"Why Can't I Insert My Double Flare Plugs?"

I either take a hot shower or soak my ears with a hot wet cloth. Then I angle the double flare plug up and push it in using a rolling method. Using a natural oil, like jojoba, also helps (as long as the stretched ear is fully healed).
Baeby
I’ve massaged my stretched lobes while in the shower, massaged them again with E-Oil, and slid them in. Every other day I take my plugs or tunnels out to clean them, and my stretched ears and to massage them with a little bit of E-Oil. Literally warmth and massaging work wonders.
Jayme
I've never successfully been able to wear a double flare plug in my life
Marceline
Well, wearing non flared/single flare plug in the same size for 2 years before even attempting it was definitely my trick lmao
MJ
I gently tug on my stretched ears throughout the day when I know I want to switch to a double flare plug after sizing up and then pop them in during a hot shower. Never had an issue
Teresa
I only buy Double flare plugs and had no idea people had issues. Hot shower and oil is absolutely needed but I can just pop mine in and out.
Tamara
If your stretched ears are healed after a while you should naturally have a bit of space. They should just pop in...for me anyway
Monika
Put the double flared plugs in after a hot shower when your stretched ears are clean and extra stretchy. Tilt one flare edge in and slowly help it in - carefully pulling your ear around the edge. That’s how I always did it!!
Angie
My lobes I have no problem getting a double flared plug in. My cartilage I have not tried it yet, I give them 6-8 months between sizing up and I've finally reached my goal of 10mm.
Brittney
I've never been able to get double flared plugs in. Sucks cause I have amethyst stone ones I really love.
Summer
Non-existent. It’s impossible! I only used double flare plugs once and it took me forever to be able to get them back out.
Chelsea
I stretched mine 1mm bigger than the size I was at. That worked perfectly for me.
Christina
I don't know, I've never done it tried many times though
Alec
Dang sounds like most of yall never wore any lol. It's pretty simple to wear other plugs or tunnels when you first stretch and allow it to actually heal. When your stretched ears are healed double flared plugs should be easy to get in.
