There may be a point where your ears just will not shrink any more. You may have stretched them to the point of not return. The point of no return varies person to person and will depend on the person. Typically we have found that the point of no return is if a person stretched their ears between 2 gauge to 00 gauge. If your ears have been stretched over 00 gauge they may shrink down, but may not close all the way. If your stretched ears are not shrinking the way you want surgery is an option to consider.
1. Not using ear taper kits properly:
I have heard several people say you should never use tapers. And they are correct. You should never use an ear taper as jewelry as there is a good chance that the ear taper will cause an uneven stretch and micro tears. These tears can lead to a blowout. A ear taper set is a tool that is used to slowly increase the gauge of your stretched ear. These taper kits allow your ears to gradually expand and adjust. They are only used to get your tunnel in your ear. If you force the taper or stretch your ears before they are ready your ears will be on a path to pain or a blowout.
We always recommend stretching your ears slowly over time. This is something that you never want to rush and for the majority of ear stretchers the number one mistake. Overstretching your ears can cause permanent damage. If you feel any pain or discomfort, stop stretching and allow your ears to rest and heal.
3. Skipping cleaning your stretched ears:
It’s important to clean your ears before and after stretching. This helps to prevent infection and keep your ears healthy. Make sure to use a salt bath or a mild soap and warm water. It seems like this is a no brainer, but for many not cleaning their ears leads to bacteria buildup and infection. If your stretched ears become infected then you will have to stop stretching and most likely move in the opposite direction.
Know what you are stretching with. Stretching jewelry should be made of safe materials such as surgical steel or titanium. Avoid using jewelry made of plastic, wood, or glass, as these can cause tearing and infection.
5. Not allowing enough time to heal:
Stretched ears need time to heal and adjust after each stretch. Allow at least 3-6 weeks between each stretch to give your ears time to heal. We always say allow more time than less time to insure your stretched ears are healed and ready for the next stretch.
6. Stretching too quickly:
Stretching your ears too quickly can cause tearing and other serious damage. Be patient and allow your ears to adjust before stretching further.
7. Not lubricating your ears:
Lubricating your ears before and during stretching is essential. Use a water-based lubricant such as jojoba oil to help with stretching and reduce friction.
8. Not listening to your body:
Pay attention to your body’s signals and stop stretching if you feel any pain or discomfort.
9. Not seeking professional help:
If you’re new to stretching or need help with larger sizes, seek out an experienced piercer or stretching expert. They can provide advice and help you choose the right jewelry and stretching techniques for your ears. If you cheap out on this one and do it on your own you are increasing your chance of a blowout or infection which can lead to medical bills that will cost you more than if you paid a professional in the first place. Also, do your research on finding a good piercer. Do not good to the first one you find.
10. Using the wrong tools:
When stretching, avoid using objects such as paperclips or screwdrivers. We have talked to several people who have used plastic straws or toothpicks to stretch their ears. This is a BIG mistake. These can cause tearing and infection. Please learn from all the people that have done this in the past and use a Ear Taper Kit.
Stretching your ears can be a great way to express yourself and show off your style. Just make sure to avoid these common mistakes to ensure a safe and successful stretching experience.
